The first thing that sparked my interest in this article was “‘Love is a tree’ might be an example of an apt metaphor, whereas, ‘a child is a machine’ seems less so.” I think the reason it sparked my interest was because I understood both of these metaphors so easily, but other people don’t. I really enjoy the metaphor ‘love is a tree’ because I believe it is. Love is a beautiful, strong, long living thing, just like a tree. But also some love is broken and damaged, just like other trees. It can be so versatile. The metaphor ‘a child is a machine’ stood out to me a lot too. Most children have a lot of energy, just like machines. This metaphor can be viewed in a good and a bad way. My best friend has a niece and a nephew who are three and four years old, and both of them are definitely machines. They are machines in a good way; they have so many thoughts racing through their heads which makes them so smart. Then in the bad way; they don’t exert in the right way, they throw tantrums, and don’t listen, but they are children who are machines. I really loved this paragraph of this article.

The next part of this article that stood out was the part about how a metaphor is like a room. I loved how he explained how the “windows and the doors frame a view toward the reality outside.” This stood out because I have never heard a description like this and it helped me understand metaphors so much more. I now understand how if people are unfamiliar with a metaphor, it won’t make much sense to them, but if they are given details about it, they will understand the entirety. This will also be a helpful reference when writing my own metaphors. I will always keep in mind how I set up ‘the view’ and how much detail I need to put into it.
